ASTM A269 and ASTM A213 often appear on stainless steel tubing drawings, but they should not be treated as interchangeable labels. The main difference is scope and intended product use.
ASTM A269 covers seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for general service. ASTM A213 covers seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel tubes for boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger service.
For an engineer or buyer, the practical takeaway is simple: start with the equipment requirement, then select the tubing specification. Do not choose the standard from material grade alone.
A269 and A213 at a Glance
| Item | ASTM A269 | ASTM A213 |
|---|---|---|
| General scope | General-service stainless steel tubing | Boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubing |
| Construction | Seamless or welded | Seamless |
| Material family | Austenitic stainless steel | Ferritic and austenitic alloy steels |
| Selection question | What construction, size and condition does the project require? | What does the heat-transfer or equipment specification require? |
This is a purchasing summary, not a substitute for the applicable standard. The project documents and specified edition control the actual order.
What ASTM A269 Covers
ASTM A269 is a general-service tubing specification for nominal-wall-thickness austenitic stainless steel tubing. Because it includes both seamless and welded construction, an RFQ that only says “ASTM A269” may still leave several questions open.
A buyer may need to define the grade, construction, OD, wall thickness, surface condition, straight or coiled form, length, additional inspection and documentation. That broad scope is one reason A269 appears across many industrial tubing requirements rather than one single equipment category.
What ASTM A213 Covers
ASTM A213 is written for seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes. That application-specific scope is why it should not be described as simply a “higher” or “better” standard than A269.
If a heat-exchanger drawing specifies A213, the tubing should be reviewed against that requirement. The correct standard is the one tied to the engineering requirement.
Why “316L Tubing” Is Not Enough
A material grade is only one part of a tubing specification. “316L stainless steel tubing” does not tell the supplier which product standard applies; whether seamless or welded construction is required; the actual OD and wall thickness; surface condition; straight or coiled form; or expected testing and documentation.
A stronger purchase description is Grade + Standard + Construction + OD + Wall + Condition + Length + Inspection + Documentation.
Where ASTM A249 Fits
A249 becomes relevant when the project involves welded austenitic tubing for boiler, superheater, heat-exchanger or condenser service.
- A269: general-service austenitic stainless steel tubing; seamless or welded.
- A213: seamless boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubing.
- A249: welded austenitic boiler, superheater, heat-exchanger and condenser tubing.
This comparison explains product families; it is not a substitution table. Do not replace one specification with another without confirming the engineering requirement and obtaining the required approval.
Dual Certification: Possible, but Never Automatic
Dual certification depends on the specific product. It should be checked against material grade, construction, heat treatment, dimensions, mechanical requirements, testing and documentation. If it is mandatory, include it in the RFQ and purchase order before production begins.
International Projects: Product Standard vs. Inspection Document
A project may use an ASTM product standard while also requiring an EN inspection document. EN 10204 defines types of inspection documents for metallic products; it does not replace the product standard that defines the tubing.
An RFQ may therefore identify separately the tubing product specification, material grade, dimensions, testing requirements and required inspection document.
Why the ASTM Number Is Not a Pressure Rating
There is no single working-pressure value for an entire ASTM tubing specification. Pressure capability depends on the actual tube and system, including OD, wall thickness, material properties, temperature, allowable stress, design factor, connections and applicable piping or equipment code.
